It is an exciting time for me to join Sweco, as we recently became Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy following the acquisition of Grontmij. As part of the Building Services group in Sweden this is a big change, as it means we now have a Building Services presence in the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Turkey adding to Sweden, Finland, Norway and Lithuania. A more international group means additional expertise, ideas and opportunities for collaboration.
Having worked as a Building Services Engineer in London, I thought it would be interesting to find out more about Sweco in the UK. Grontmij UK was rebranded as Sweco UK at the beginning of April with a Building Services and Energy team of over 200 employees.
Sweco Building Services and Energy team in the UK offer the following:

Sweco UK’s Building Services team have experience in a wide range of sectors including commercial, high rise, mixed use, residential, education, hotels, fit-out, and refurbishments. Some examples of projects can be seen below, including the iconic Battersea Power Station redevelopment project and Camden HQ 5 Pancras Square which achieved a “BREEAM outstanding” rating.
Sweco UK have won awards at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) for the last four consecutive years including “BREEAM Assessor Company of the Year” and “BREEAM Assessor of the Year” for 2016. Read the press article here to find out more.
An example of one of their award winning projects is 1 Pancras square in London, a 7,500m2 office development near Kings Cross. The predicted annual emissions for the office development was only 8.5kgCO2/m2. This was achievable due to passive design features such as an optimized glazing ratio, exposed concrete floor slabs and occupant controlled panel openings of the façade with the option of natural ventilation or full mechanical ventilation for the tenants. Predicted emissions were reduced by a third as a result of the district heating system and further reduced by the 230m2 area of PV panels installed on the roof. The project achieved a ”BREEAM outstanding” rating.
Going forward I look forward to collaborating and sharing knowledge with the UK team and our other international offices.
